A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer suffered major injuries this evening in Sunnyvale after a vehicle ran a red light and struck him.

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer in the hospital after he suffered major injuries Thursday evening in Sunnyvale after a vehicle ran a red light and struck him.

Two CHP officers were exiting northbound U.S. Highway 101 to southbound Lawrence Expressway around 9:30 p.m. when the collision occurred, according to Officer Jared Diaz.

As they were leaving the ramp, one of the officers was struck by a vehicle traveling north on Lawrence Expressway, Diaz said.

The injured officer was taken to a hospital with major non-life threatening injuries.

The driver was found to not be under the influence, and the cause of the collision remains under investigation.
