SAN JOSE (KGO) -- A CHP vehicle was struck by a bullet Thursday night during a stop on Highway 101 in San Jose. No officers were injured and the suspect is at large.

At 11:36 Thursday night two CHP officers were on northbound 101 on a car stop when at least one shot was fired.

"They head a loud noise - see a flash - then obviously after further investigation they discover that their patrol vehicle was struck by one of those bullets," said San Jose police spokesman, Albert Morales.

The officers and the driver of the vehicle they pulled over were not hurt. Investigators closed both directions of 101 between Tully and Story Roads as they canvassed the area. They're still trying to determine what kind of gun was used and if the shots came from a moving car or the surrounding neighborhood around 101 and Tully Road.

Doing car stops in the middle of the night is a dangerous part of the CHP's job -- now investigators are trying to determine if someone's targeting them.

"If something comes to light that we determine this was a targeted attack then we'll take the appropriate measures. But again, nothing right now that would lead us to believe that," said Morales.

The CHP is searching the vehicle to see if there are any other bullet holes. So far no arrests have been made.
