Community meeting in Millbrae after fire destroys recreation center

MILLBRAE, Calif. (KGO) -- City leaders in Millbrae are vowing to rebuild the community center lost Thursday to a fire. They updated people in a community meeting on Friday.

Investigators are asking for anyone who may have seen something in the area of the community center to come forward.

"It's sad to look at it. It's sad to kind of recognize kind of what we lost yesterday," a Millbrae resident said.

Many in Millbrae have memories rooted at the community center. Some are stopping by Lincoln Circle to see the destruction caused by the fire in person -- others are taking charge.

Mayor Anne Oliva vowed to rebuild at the meeting Friday morning. "We're going to rebuild the building located in and known as the center of our city," Oliva said.

Residents asked what it'll take to do so.

The city manager says how much the city has for insurance depends on what components of the property are damaged - building, park land and so on.

She's meeting with the city's insurance carrier.

Meanwhile, investigators are working to determine what or who caused the fire.

Central County Fire Chief John Kammeyer is asking for help from neighbors. "If they've seen anything, if it was the past, last night, yesterday, whatever it is, we want to know."

Local businesses and organizations are stepping up to help community groups displaced by the fire.

The city's Relay for Life event is being relocated to Spring Valley Elementary School.
