A San Jose firefighter was slightly injured Friday and four families were displaced in a three-alarm fire that destroyed an apartment building in South San Jose, a fire captain said.

San Jose fire crews had knocked down the fire at 778 Warring Drive by 4:02 p.m. but still had not controlled it, fire Capt. Cleo Doss said.

The four-unit building has been completely destroyed by the fire and four families will have to find new places to stay, Doss said.

The American Red Cross has arrived at the scene to help the displaced find new shelter, Doss said.

One firefighter was treated and released at the scene for smoke inhalation and a second person may have been injured in the area, though not from the fire, Doss said.

The San Jose Fire Department was notified about the blaze about two blocks south of Blossom Hill Road in the Almaden area at 2:04 p.m.

City fire answered the first two alarms and Santa Clara County firefighters answered the third alarm, Doss said.

In all, 50-60 firefighters from 15 units were battling the fire at its peak. Crews were able to prevent flames from spreading to neighboring apartment buildings on the block, according to Doss.

Firefighters do not yet know what caused the blaze, he said.
