An official told the Associated Press that residents tried to scare the rhino away by honking horns and beating drums.

"The whole town is terrorized by this animal. It even entered the local hospital, forcing terrified people to jump over the fences," said Ram Prasad Thapaliya, a government administrator.

At least one bystander posted video of the rhino chasing a motorcycle down the street. Another video shows the rhino strolling through the streets in a major intersection, pursued by people in military uniform.

Thapaliya said teams with tranquilizer guns had been sent to subdue and capture the rhino.

The rhino fatally gored a 61-year-old woman and injured an unknown number of people, Thapaliya said.
