Driver critically injured in crash in Union City

UNION CITY, Calif. -- The driver of a Chevrolet Malibu was critically injured in a crash with a box truck in Union City this morning, police said.

The collision at the intersection of Whipple Road and Central Avenue was reported at 3:26 a.m., police said.

The Malibu was heading east on Whipple Road and hit the box truck as it was making a left turn from Northbound Central onto westbound Whipple, police said.

Alameda County firefighters had to extricate the Malibu driver from the car. That driver was taken to a trauma center with life-threatening injuries, police said.

The box truck's driver did not require hospitalization and is cooperating with the investigation, police said.
