Drunk driver involved in San Jose crash that killed pedestrian, hit ABC7 News van, speaks out

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- The drunk driver who killed a pedestrian as he ran a red light in San Jose Thursday, and smashed into an ABC7 News van, did an interview with ABC7 News from jail.

Doug Andreen, 61, died as he left city hall to get pizza across the street with co-workers.

In an instant, Andreen was killed crossing the street. A white truck ran the light at 4th and Santa Clara streets late Friday afternoon, hitting two cars and pushing Andreen's body under ABC7's news van parked on the corner. The photographer and reporter were both treated at the hospital and released.

Grief counselors will be available Monday at city hall where Andreen worked for 10 years as an accountant in the public works department.

He lived nearby in an apartment complex with his beloved cat Tinkerbell. The cat is being adopted by his niece. Andreen loved camping and fishing, say his friends, and spent a lot of time at the San Jose Animal Care Center, where his family will direct donations to help rescue cats there.

Ricardo Gomez talked from jail Friday about the accident.

"When I got out of the truck I said, 'Sorry about that, I'm sorry. I drank a couple beers and I wasn't paying attention,'" said the 41-year-old.

He says he has two previous DUI arrests.

"If I could take everything back I should have never drank," Gomez said.
