Elderly woman hit, kills husband with car accidentally
Officials say a woman accused of hitting and killing her husband with a car in Marinez was trying to hit the brake, but pressed on the accelerator instead.

MARTINEZ, Calif. (KGO) -- Officials say a woman behind the wheel of a Toyota Corolla accidentally hit and killed her husband on Wednesday.

According to CHP investigators, 84-year-old Yvonne Cottrell was trying to re-position a car with the garage door open. Her husband, 90-year-old Glen Cottrell, was giving her instructions when she accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake pedal.

Because her husband was in front of the car he was run over and pinned beneath it.

The vehicle went through the back wall of the garage and into the backyard before stopping in front of a pile of pipes and scrap metal.

"Regardless of age, regardless of gender, it truly is just an unfortunate set of circumstances and this truly is an accident. While it is still being investigated, certainly drugs and alcohol don't appear to be a factor in this related investigation, but our condolences we certainly feel for the family," CHP Sgt. Greg Xepoleas said.

Glen was alive and talking in the ambulance, but died at John Muir Medical Center.

He was shy of turning 90 years old.
