Evacuations lifted at scene of gas main break in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The San Jose Police Department says a construction crew broke a 2-inch gas main line in San Jose about 9:25 a.m., temporarily prompting an evacuation and a shelter in place near the 300 block of South Capitol Avenue.

The San Jose Fire Department responded to the gas main break near the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority Alum Rock light-rail station, a fire dispatcher said.

The gas line has been capped and repairs are underway, but Southbound Capitol Avenue between Florence and Wilbur Avenue remain closed.

VTA spokeswoman Brandi Childress said buses will be taking passengers from McKee to Alum Rock until the gas main break is fixed.
