ONLY ON ABC7NEWS.COM: 'He was trying to kill us,' Napa neighbor on harrowing officer-involved shooting

NAPA, Calif. (KGO) -- There's more to learn about the shootout between Napa police and the man they shot and killed in a suburban neighborhood Tuesday.

Here is the harrowing story Napa resident Steve Ruane will tell for the rest of his life. "He was standing right there in front of that tree," Ruane said, gesturing. "The last time I looked back I could see more smoke coming out of his gun and it was going off."

"We're hearing multiple calls of a man yelling, 'Get down,'" said officials on a scanner. "Multiple shots fired."

That dispatch came in moments before Steve Ferry tried to leave his home in his car, leading to a chase and shootout with Napa police, causing him to crash into a tree.

Ruane says officers surrounded the car, weapons drawn. "And then, 15 seconds later, boom boom boom -- at least a hundred rounds just opened fire into the car."

Depending on who describes him, Ferry was either an earnest entrepreneur who sold wine-infused wood chips in local stores or else -- a crazed and tormented man prone to disputes with his neighbors, who say they often heard him yelling in his house or his yard, as on Tuesday.

"Jibberish you know, like you hear at an insane asylum," Ruane told ABC7 News.

Before the shooting, Napa police had already been to the house once that day, after Ferry got into yet another argument with his neighbors.

After police left, problems escalated. Perry pushed a woman to the ground in the middle of the street, then he kicked her, then came back with a large pistol. At that point, everybody ran into Ruane's home and took cover.

"Oh he knew we were right behind that door," Ruane added. "That's where the shots are. He was trying to kill us."

Fortunately, every single bullet missed. The holes from them have left Ruane with some most unusual home repair work Thursday. That will be the easy part.

When asked how he could get over this, Ruane said, "It's easier when you don't get shot."
