SAN MATEO, Calif. (KGO) -- The family of a San Mateo woman, killed by a driver police say was driving high on drugs, spoke to ABC7 News.
Nina Falk was 84 years old and was struck and killed in a Walgreens parking lot.
Police say 21-year-old Sonia Toor was high behind the wheel after smoking marijuana and was possibly using other drugs.
Falk's son, Paul Partti, said he cannot believe his mother's life ended in the Walgreens parking lot at the hands of an impaired driver.
"It's horrible, it's unbelievable. People can be so selfish," Partti said.
Falk was an active senior who had just moved to Downtown San Mateo to be close to the things she liked -- restaurants and shopping.
"It wasn't like a little old lady tip toeing around through the parking lot, she was in good shape," Partti said.
Last Friday, as Falk was leaving the Walgreen's pharmacy, Toor changed her mind about visiting the drive-up pharmacy window and backed her minivan out quickly running Falk down.
"What could it be? She had to wait too long? Five more minutes or whatever, she just backed up from this window," Partti said.
Falk, died on Saturday from her injuries. The suspect, was charged with felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter.
"Hopefully, they punish her really good for this and nobody else will do it. And make it safe for the elderly," San Mateo resident Myrna Bartolo said.
Neighbors are outraged about the tragedy. Partti says his mom immigrated to the Bay Area from Finland 40 years ago. Sadly, she had gone to Walgreens to ask a simple question about some new medications.
"I saw she had a little bag. It was next to her in the hospital and there were two medicines. She went there to ask how to use them," Partti said.
He sends this message to the person who ended his mom's life: "You made a decision... you have to live with that."
Funeral services for Falk will be held next week.
Police are asking for the public's assistance in finding any witnesses to the incident who have not yet come forward. Anyone with information is asked to call the Police Department's traffic unit at (650) 522-7740.
