OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- During an emotional memorial for fallen Hayward Police Sergeant Scott Lunger, his father gave a moving speech.

"Scott, you were a talented electrician. And then when you were about 30 you said you wanted to enter the police academy. I wasn't too concerned because at age 30 there was no way you would make it. Especially with all of those young studs. But to my surprise, you passed and were accepted. And I was a very proud dad. Ever since then I've been preparing myself for this day as parents do. We talked about my concern for your safety a lot. And you always said, 'Dad, don't worry. When it's your time to go, you can't do a thing about it. It's in God's hands.' Well, your time to go came way too soon. A son is supposed to bury his dad. Not the other way around. I want you to know, the whole country knows who you are, Scott," said Paul Lunger.

The memorial for the 15-year veteran of the force was held at Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif. on Thursday, July 30, 2015. Law enforcement officers from across the country are honoring of the fallen sergeant, who was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop on July 22, 2015.
