SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- Homes and businesses near 6th and E. Virginia streets in San Jose were evacuated Sunday night as crews battled a 2-alarm fire at a nearby propane yard, but residents were allowed to return home early Monday morning.

Between 20 and 30 homes in a 10 block radius around the propane yard had been evacuated as a precaution, but once the fire was under control the evacuation order was lifted.

The fire was first reported around 11 p.m. Sunday night. The fire department says there were as many as 100 propane tanks may be in the yard, but only about a half dozen burned and none exploded.

Both directions of Interstate 280 had been closed due to the fire but reopened just before midnight.
