SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (KGO) -- A fast-moving fire ripped through a South Lake Tahoe hotel Wednesday night, sending two people to the hospital and causing $2.5 million in damage.

The fire broke out at about 11:45 p.m. inside the Deerfield Lodge, just west of the Casino District.

It destroyed six units and six cars and displaced 35 people. Firefighters kept the flames from spreading to the front of the hotel.

One witness said the fire was spitting off red hot embers. "There was a point where the embers were blowing right over our house and I was looking for a hose to try and water down anything that could potentially catch fire," Bryce Wilson said.

Two people were seriously injured when they jumped from a second-story balcony to escape the fire. They were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
