HAYWARD, Calif. (KGO) -- A Hayward city councilman has turned to crowdfunding to help a little league group hit by theft.

Thieves broke into the Tennyson American Little League's clubhouse at Sorensdale Park Sunday night. They got away with a safe and $7,000.

The league usually doesn't keep that much cash in its safe, but it had just finished its annual weekend fundraiser. They were going to deposit the money in the bank on Monday, but thieves got to it first.

The Oakland Athletics and firefighters have donated $2,000 to help.

But Councilman Francisco Zermeno wants to show the community is behind the group and has organized an account on GoFundMe to make up the rest of the money.

Donations can also be made to the Tennyson American Little League at P.O. Box 3355, Hayward, CA 94544.
