UNION CITY, Calif. -- Union City police said that jealousy appears to be the motive in the fatal shooting of a 32-year-old man in the parking lot of a nightclub on Friday night.

Police identified the victim of the shooting in the parking lot of The Spot bar at 32611 Alvarado Blvd. at about 11:45 p.m. Friday as Tjorn Ernis MaGee of Salinas.

Officers who responded to the scene found MaGee suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police said today that Gary Wayne Gates, of East Palo Alto, and Kenneth Throne Young, of San Jose, both 53, have been arrested in connection with the shooting and are scheduled to be arraigned in Alameda County superior Court in Fremont at 2 p.m. today.

Witnesses in the area of the shooting told police that the suspects got into a white van.

Several Fremont police officers saw a van matching the witnesses' descriptions and stopped the van on Interstate Highway 680 near Washington Boulevard in their city, according to police.

Gates and Young were arrested at the car stop and police said an investigation confirmed they were the suspects in the homicide.

Union City police said it appears the motive in the case was jealousy regarding an ex-girlfriend and her interaction with MaGee.

Young works in the air conditioning field and Gates works in construction, according to jail records.

Both men are being held in custody without bail.
