Longtime Celebrity Couples Who Called It Quits

In Hollywood, couples who make it past the 10-year mark are rare, which makes the news of their splits even more surprising.

Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas are the latest couple whose divorce we didn't see coming. After 18 years of marriage, Griffith, 56, filed the paperwork, citing irreconcilable differences. She asked for joint custody for the couple's daughter, Stella, who will turn 18 in September, though she petitioned for primary physical custody. She also asked for spousal support.

A rep for the couple told ABC News, "We have thoughtfully and consensually decided to finalize our almost twenty years marriage in a loving and friendly manner honoring and respecting each other, our family and friends and the beautiful time we have spent together."

After 11 years of marriage, Richard Gere and Carey Lowell called it quits last year, according to multiple reports. The couple wed in 2002 after dating for about seven years and are parents to son Homer, born in 2000.

Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis

Together since 1998, Johnny Depp and French model Vanessa Paradis were as committed as any married couple while raising their two kids together. But in 2012, after 14 years together, they split. Depp is now engaged to be married to actress Amber Heard.

Kris and Bruce Jenner

Kris and Bruce Jenner announced in October that they were separating after 22 years. "We are living separately and we are much happier this way," the couple told E! News in a statement. They also remain the best of friends and continue to co-parent their family, which includes two teenage daughters together and eight children between them from previous relationships.

Robin and Marsha Williams

After 19 years together, Robin Williams and his wife Marsha split in 2008. Marsha raised two kids with the comedian, produced several of his films and even saw him through an alcohol relapse, but in the end she filed the divorce petition, citing irreconcilable differences.

Fans were surprised when the never-married couple Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins split in 2009 after 23 years and two sons together. The actress said recently that her performance in the Broadway show "Exit the King," a play about confronting mortality, made her re-examine the relationship. "You can't do a meditation on death and stay in a situation that's not authentic," she told AARP magazine in February. "It made me examine where I was in my union and in my life, and to have discussions about making changes." Sarandon is now dating Jonathan Bricklin, with whom she owns SPiN, a pingpong franchise.
