NC man arrested for VHS tape not returned in 2002
The store where the tape was rented has since gone out of business

CONCORD, NC -- Remember going to the rental store to pick out VHS tapes? Well, a 2002 rental of the movie "Freddy Got Fingered" has come back to haunt a Concord, NC man.

WSOC-TV reports a police officer stopped James Meyers for a broken tail-light. But when the officer checked Meyers' license, he found an old warrant charging Meyers with theft of the tape.

The officer let him take his daughter to school as long as he promised to come to the police station. Meyers told WSOC he thought maybe it was all a joke until he was put in handcuffs and taken to the magistrate's office.

The video store that rented the tape is no longer in business.

Meyers said he vaguely remembers renting the tape, but no longer has it. He said he is hoping to have the charge dismissed.

However, on Wednesday night the arrestee received a call from Tom Green, the writer-director-star of "Freddy" who reached out after Meyers's friend shared the story, first reported by WSOC, with him on Twitter.

Green, who is currently on a stand-up comedy tour in Australia, told the Daily News that he is happy to support fans of his film
