2 juveniles arrested in violent home invasion in Oakland Hills

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- A home invasion in the Oakland Hills left an elderly homeowner beaten and robbed. It happened at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday on Sequoyah Road, and it wasn't the first time.

Police say the two people arrested are juveniles and there may be a third person involved. While it wasn't the first time this home was invaded, it was the first time it was invaded while the residents were inside.

"It happens, you know? It happens everywhere," said one neighbor.

In this case, it happened to two elderly men in their 70s and 80s under their own roof.

"I can't come up with the right adjective to describe it," said neighbor Rodney Burge. "Chaos, turmoil, mayhem."

Oakland police say two of three suspects entered the home and assaulted the men, then stole property and a Cadillac from the carport.

When we asked to speak with one of the victims, he would not even open his door.

At a press conference early Tuesday afternoon, Oakland police told of an arrest of two juvenile suspects less than two hours after the entry.

"Well it was the vehicle that alerted patrol officers, it was listed as a vehicle in a carjacking," said Officer Marco Marquez.

In Oakland, home invasions remain a tender subject.

"It is really sad to see that people cannot be safe in their homes in Oakland," said neighbor Dottie Barrett.

On Tuesday morning, Mayor Libby Schaff released a statement that reads in part:

"While I know it is little comfort to those already hurt by crime, we are making progress. Last year we reduced home invasion robberies by 55 percent, and this year they are down by another 9 percent."

It was a small consolation on Sequoya Road Tuesday.

"I think I might get a video camera or two," said Burge.
