ANTIOCH, Calif. -- A man died after falling onto rocks and into the water near the Antioch Marina today, a police lieutenant said.

The man was fishing with friends from an Oakland church group a short time before noon in the area of the Dow Wetlands Preserve when the fatal accident occurred, according to Antioch police Lt. John Vanderklugt.

It appears that while the man was fishing he waded into the water, fell and hit his head on some rocks, Vanderklugt said.

The victim's friends rushed in to the water to help him and attempted CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, the lieutenant said.

"It happened very quickly and is a very tragic and unfortunate accident," Vanderklugt said.

The victim, whose name has not yet been released, is believed to be a 50-year-old Oakland resident, according to the lieutenant.
