Man's body found in lake at San Francisco's Golden Gate Park

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- San Francisco police drained Alvord Lake in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park to search for evidence after a man's body was found floating there Tuesday morning.

Police are treating it as a suspicious death.

Investigators say a gardener at Golden Gate Park spotted a man's body floating face down in Alvord Lake at 7 a.m.

San Francisco homicide detectives along with the Medical Examiner's Office spent most of the day searching for evidence. "At this point all that homicide can say is it does appear there may have been a struggle," San Francisco Police Department spokesperson Giselle Talkoff said.

At least 12 evidence markers lined the path outside the lake. At one point officers expanded their perimeter. "It looks like there may have been more evidence," Talkoff said.

Although investigators would not say what.

People who walk through the park were surprised to see an active crime scene. "I find it pretty odd that it was in the front of the park," Joseph Dileo said.

Betsy Rix says police asked her if she recognized the victim. "They showed me a picture of an older gentleman, said he was the person who had been found this morning, asked if I had seen him or if we had any cameras that might have picked something up and I hadn't seen him. It's just a very sad situation all around," Rix said.

Several nearby restaurant employees said officers had been by their businesses as well.

Investigators say the victim's identity will be released once the medical examiner's investigation is complete.
