NAPA, Calif. (KGO) -- Napa police are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday evening on Spring Street, near Hill Avenue in the Alta Heights area. It happened while officers were serving a search warrant.

The shooting occurred shortly before 5 p.m. when officers serving a warrant for drugs and firearms contacted the subject of the warrant -- a 41-year-old man whose name has not yet been released, according to police.

The man died in the hospital later Friday evening.

A witness told ABC7 News the subject officers were trying to serve a search warrant to speed away on a motorcycle, from a house located just a few yards from the shooting scene.

A handgun was found at the scene of the shooting, but it is not yet clear if the man pulled out the gun or fired a shot.

The Napa County Sheriff's Department will lead the investigation into the shooting, as per county protocol, police said.
