NEWARK, Calif. (KGO) -- A domestic violence suspect barricaded himself with his 1-year-old son inside a Newark apartment and were in a 12-hour standoff with police. He released his son and peacefully surrendered after 9 p.m.

The incident began around 9 a.m. Friday morning near the 36700 block of Sycamore Street, near Thornton Avenue. Police say the child has not been harmed.

Hostage negotiators tried all day to peacefully resolve the situation, said Newark police commander Mike Carroll. The Newark SWAT team was also on scene.

Police say the man is a suspect in several domestic violence incidents.

The suspect is the child's biological father and police arrived at his apartment following a report of a domestic violence incident, police said during a news conference Friday.

A few apartments in the area were evacuated and a few residents elected to shelter in place.
