Oakland man killed in solo vehicle crash on Hwy 24

OAKLAND, Calif. -- A 73-year-old man was killed in a crash on state Highway 24 in Oakland early this Saturday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The accident on westbound Highway 24 just east of the Golden Gate Avenue undercrossing occurred at about 5:25 a.m., CHP officials said.

The man was driving a 2007 Nissan Maxima that veered to the left, traveled off the roadway and crashed into a metal guardrail, according to the CHP.

The vehicle continued traveling forward until it came to rest on its wheels and against a concrete wall in the center divide, CHP officials said.

Arriving officers attempted life-saving measures until Alameda County paramedics and Oakland firefighters got to the scene, according to the CHP.

Emergency crews pronounced the man dead shortly after they reached the scene, CHP officials.

He has been identified as Antioch resident Arthur Wise, according to the Alameda County coroner's bureau.

Two lanes of Highway 24 were closed until about 7:30 a.m. for CHP officers to investigate and for crews to recover the vehicle, according to the CHP.
