A Columbus, Ohio police officer died Tuesday after being shot over the weekend while serving a warrant, officials said.

Officer Steven M. Smith, died just before 5 p.m. and was survived by his wife of 32 years, Lisa Smith and two adult children, according to the Columbus Division of Police.

The 27-year-veteran was critically wounded during a standoff on April 9 when SWAT officers tried to serve a warrant on a suspect because of his "erratic behavior and access to weapons," police said.

"SWAT members approached the apartment and were fired upon as the suspect shot multiple times through a first-floor window," police said. "One officer, positioned in an armored vehicle, was struck and critically injured."

The suspect then held officers at bay for hours and was taken into custody at 7:15 a.m.

The suspect was initially charged with attempted murder, police said.
