SAN JOSE, Calif. -- One person is dead after a car struck a pillar and another vehicle and caught fire at a parking garage in downtown San Jose Monday morning, police and fire officials said.

The crash and fire was reported at 9:17 a.m. on the second floor of a parking garage in the 100 block of West Hedding Street, across the street from Santa Clara County Superior Court, police said.

The vehicle caught fire after hitting the pillar and another car in the garage and the driver was not able to get out of the vehicle before it became engulfed in flames, San Jose Fire Capt. Reggie Williams said.

The flames spread to three other cars before being extinguished, Williams said.

"At this time, the cause of the vehicle accident and the subsequent fire are under investigation. I believe San Jose Police Department will be taking over that investigation," said Williams.

The captain said there did not appear to be significant crash damage to the car that caught fire and investigators are considering the possibility the driver suffered a medical emergency prior to the crash.

The identity of the driver is not yet being released, pending notification of next of kin, police said.

No one else was injured in the incident, which remains under investigation by San Jose police and fire officials.

All roads in the area are now open.
