SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- A group of wounded veterans landed in San Jose Wednesday to participate in what many call a life-saving experience on the water.

The veterans have all been severely wounded during their tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now, they're on their way to Santa Cruz to be a part of Operation Surf where they will wax up their boards and surf the Central Coast beaches.

For many of the vets, this is their first trip outside the hospital.

This is Operation Surf's sixth year helping the wounded heroes experience something out of the ordinary.
