Person of interest detained in Cherryland homicide

HAYWARD, Calif. (KGO) -- Alameda County sheriff's deputies have detained a person of interest in the fatal shooting of a man stopped at an intersection in Cherryland Wednesday afternoon, a sheriff's spokesman said.

The victim was stopped in his red Dodge pickup truck on southbound Meekland Avenue while waiting to make a left turn onto Blossom Hill Road when a gunman approached on foot and shot him execution style several times at about 1 p.m., sheriff's Sgt. Ray Kelly said.

Investigators say they are pretty sure they have the right suspect based on witness testimony and surveillance video.

"We're trying to see what is the correlation between the person that we have detained and the victim," Kelly said. "Was this a targeted, purposeful murder, or was this some type of road rage or encounter that led to gun violence?"

The suspect fled on foot down nearby railroad tracks. Deputies responded and shut down the intersection, where the victim was pronounced dead.

Sheriff's deputies set up a perimeter and used dogs and a helicopter to search for the suspect.

The initial information they obtained about the suspect was limited, but investigators were reviewing surveillance footage to better find out what he looks like, Kelly said.

Streets remain closed in the area. The intersection of Blossom Hill and Meekland will be closed for several hours as investigators process the crime scene for evidence, Kelly said.

A gun has not been recovered and the man detained did not have a gun. The victim has been described as a Hispanic male in his 30s.
