SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- In South San Jose, a major highway was closed Thursday night following a shooting that involved one of their officers.

Both directions of Monterey Highway were closed, between Flintwell Way and Palmwell Way, for four hours due to the large police investigation.

San Jose police say around 6:30 p.m. officers were dispatched to the 6100 block of Monterey Road for a welfare check. That's where they say an officer made contact with the suspect and a shooting occurred.

Police say the suspect was injured and transported to the hospital with at least one gunshot wound. There is no word on the condition of the person shot, but no officers were injured in this incident.

A neighbor told ABC7 News a month ago there was man off his medication who was with his ex-girlfriend in the neighborhood. According to the neighbor, at that time the man called police saying he had a gun and he wanted to be shot by a cop. Police did not shoot him in that incident.

The neighbor told ABC7 News, they wondered if this was the same mentally ill man from before.
