Fresh paint now covers graffiti in a busy East Bay Park. Families who took their kids there for Easter were greeted with racist slogans.

Police had the racist and offensive graffiti quickly cleaned up because they say it is not the type of image they want to have in San Leandro.

The graffiti was discovered on a wall at Marina Park. It contained profanity and racial slurs directed at Hispanics and African Americans.

Not only is the graffiti offensive, police believe it's gang-related.

The number 14, used in a drawing, is connected to the Norteno gang.

"The graffiti itself we believe was done by a Hayward-based gang and our investigators are looking into the possibility of who the suspects in this case could really be right now. We do not believe this is a white supremist gang but more of a Norteno turf gang," San Leandro Police Lt. Robert McManus said.

Parents at the park were upset to learn the graffiti was found so close to the playground.

This is the second incident of racist graffiti in San Leandro this month. Recently a man was arrested for writing slurs on a school district office.

Police do not believe the two cases are related.
