SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- Police officials tell KABC-TV that two officers were fired upon early Friday when they stopped to talk to five men standing outside a home in a residential neighborhood.

Lieutenant Richard Lawhead says one of the men pulled out an AK-47 and immediately opened fire on the officers as they approached.

Lawhead says one of the officers was hit and his partner managed to shoot the suspect. KABC reports the suspect was killed.

The partner was engaged in a gun battle with the other men until backup arrived.

Investigators have set up a perimeter at the scene.

No arrests have been announced. Police have scheduled a news conference.
