Missing 7-year-old Oakland girl found safe

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- An Oakland girl is safe after going missing Monday night and prompting a police search. But her ordeal is not over as sad circumstances have come to light as a result of her brief disappearance.

Law enforcement officials have said they don't plan on reuniting the girl with her mother. Though, she contends her daughter was kidnapped.

"Somebody cut the gate and took my child. My child would not walk off," said the girl's mother Demetris Ford.

But the girl was safe. She wandered into the East Oakland Faith Deliverance Center Church and was cared for overnight by a couple attending a prayer service. The police were not notified.

"Just said that she was lost," said church member Bulinda Kingblood.

The couple kept the girl Monday night and was ready to take her to school Tuesday morning before seeing her picture on television. They drove to the police station instead.

"Preliminary evaluation, she's in good shape right now. But, there is still a lot more work to do on this case," said Lieutenant Kevin Wiley with the Oakland Police Department.

Police say they don't want the girl returning to her home.

"Not very soon, if we can help that," said Wiley.

"They won't call, they won't respond, they haven't told me nothing. I just heard it from over the Internet, the news. Everybody say they found her but police won't tell me nothing," said Ford.

Officers are looking into a report that Ford sent her daughter out to get some Percocet. Ford said she fell asleep, woke up to find her daughter was gone. Both Ford and the Oakland police want to know why officials were not called Monday night when the girl was found.

"Instead of keeping her overnight she should have called the police," said Ford.

When Kingblood was asked why she never called police, she responded by saying she had no other comment.
