SAN FRANCISCO -- A vehicle struck a cable car conductor Monday morning in San Francisco's Nob Hill neighborhood, according to a fire spokeswoman.

San Francisco Fire Department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said, based on initial reports, a cable car operator was struck by a vehicle in the 1100 block of Powell Street between Washington and Jackson streets at about 10:35 a.m.

The historic Powell Street cable car line runs north to south along that stretch.

Talmadge said the conductor was apparently seen crawling out from beneath a vehicle after being struck. The conductor was hospitalized with major injuries.

Police have also responded to the scene to investigate the cause of the collision, Talmadge said.
