ANTIOCH, Calif. (KGO) -- Residents from 32 apartments were evacuated as firefighters battled a three-alarm fire at an apartment complex in Antioch Wednesday morning.

Firefighters responded at 8:15 a.m. to a report of a fire at the Delta Pines Apartments at 2301 Sycamore Drive, Fire Inspector Steve Aubert said.

Firefighters say they were forced to take a defensive approach because of how quickly the fire spread, getting up into the attic of one of the buildings and collapsing the roof.

Aubert said fire crews arrived to find thick black smoke coming from one apartment module, which contain several apartment units.

The two-story conjoined units share attic space and the fire quickly spread from one set of apartments to the next, he said.

Firefighters say everyone got out safely, but they think at least 30 people are now displaced.

Residents describe the situation as terrifying. "I heard a boom and then the fire alarm went off. So I jumped up and ran out and was hit by the smoke," said resident Beatrice Nuttall.

No injuries have been reported.

The fire could be seen from Highway 4.
