SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- Police are investigating a Thursday night officer-involved shooting in San Jose that closed Monterey Highway in both directions for more than four hours.

Officers responded at 6:34 p.m. to the 6100 block of Monterey Road for a welfare check. Officers located a suspect in the area of Monterey Road, north of Southlake Drive.

The shooting occurred when the officer made contact with the suspect, police said.

Police say the suspect was injured and transported to the hospital with at least one gunshot wound. There is no word on the condition of the person shot, but no officers were injured in this incident.

A neighbor told ABC7 News a month ago there was man off his medication who was with his ex-girlfriend in the neighborhood. According to the neighbor, at that time the man called police saying he had a gun and he wanted to be shot by a cop. Police did not shoot him in that incident.

The neighbor told ABC7 News, they wondered if this was the same mentally ill man from before.
