San Leandro police, fire responding to pedestrian fatality

SAN LEANDRO, Calif. -- San Leandro police department and Alameda County Fire Personnel responded to a vehicle collision in the intersection of Washington Ave. and Monterey Blvd. just after 11:20 on Friday afternoon.

When the first responders arrived, they found an elderly man, believed to be in his 70s, pinned underneath a rental truck.

Fire personnel used equipment to lift the vehicle and remove the man. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Police Traffic Investigators responded and are conducting a thorough investigation into the collision.

The driver of the rental truck has been cooperative with investigators. Alcohol or drugs are not a factor in this tragic incident. His name is not being released at this time.

Witnesses report that the man was crossing Washington Ave. in a crosswalk at the time that he was struck. The rental truck was driving from Monterey Blvd., making a left turn onto Washington Ave. This is an active investigation and investigators are continuing to interview witnesses and determine what happened. Police are not releasing any more details at this time.

The Alameda County Coroner's Bureau responded and has since taken custody of the man's body. His name and other identifying information is not being released at this time, pending notification of his family.

"This is very tragic, especially during the holiday season," said Lt. Robert McManus. "We offer our condolences to the family and friends of the man that was involved in this unfortunate collision."

Police investigators will meet with the Alameda County District Attorney after their investigation is complete. The case will be reviewed for criminal charging.
