SAN MATEO, Calif. -- The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of an increase in burglaries throughout the peninsula, south of Highway 92.

Deputies said the crimes are occurring in county cities and in unincorporated areas of the county, especially at residences left unsecured.

One common tactic burglars are using is knocking on the front door of a residence before trying to break in, according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office is reminding residents to lock doors, windows and garages and be vigilant in reporting suspicious activity.
