A 15-year-old San Pablo boy is in critical condition after police shot him while he was driving a stolen car Sunday night.

New surveillance video captures the shooting as the teenager was trying to get away.

The Contra Costa District Attorney's Office is still working to confirm that identification of the young man shot by police, but they believe he is only 15 years old.

They'll also be reviewing the surveillance footage.

Two San Pablo police patrol cars blocked Bush Avenue where it meets Rumrill Boulevard, as seen from business surveillance footage.

"When we checked the license plate, it came back as a stolen vehicle," Sgt. Brian Bubar said.

The officers were waiting for a silver vehicle around 11:30 Sunday night.

It's followed by a third patrol car as they attempt to stop the vehicle, explained Bubar.

"The subject then rapidly accelerated directly at an officer who was standing near the intersection outside of his patrol car," Bubar said.

The DA's office is investigating and says the officer fired four shots in succession. One struck the unidentified juvenile behind the wheel.

Officers blocked Rumrill Boulevard to traffic overnight while scouring for video evidence.

"I just heard some shots, but I thought that it was fireworks," neighbor Garciella Gonzalez said.

Investigators say the officer who fired was injured when the vehicle struck his patrol car while trying to get way and he was slammed between his door and his car.

The DA's office is not naming the officer but says he's served for four years and is now on administrative leave during the investigation.
