After a seven-and-a-half-hour standoff in San Jose, Sheriff's SWAT team arrested Rogelio Chavez.

He had been hiding in an apartment in a South San Jose neighborhood. A friend of Chavez', Karla Hernandez, was also arrested.

She was charged with being an accessory. Reports placed Chavez in the attic.

Sheriff's deputies asked for equipment to crack holes in the ceiling.

"Look at it, it's destroyed, everything," said Liza Martinez, Hernandez' aunt. "The ceiling is completely destoryed.

The ceiling drywall was gone, and insulation was piled up on the floors of the two bedroom unit where Chavez was found. You could see the damage from the open windows.

The whiff of hot incendiary gas fired by SWAT lingered until Thursday.

Martinez says deputies searched the unit for drugs and guns two weeks ago.

"They came here for a gentleman who didn't live here," she said. "A gentleman called Manuel, and said he was associated with someone who escaped from jail."

In the wake of the escape, the Sheriff's office says it's stepping up security.

The main jail, where the inmates escaped, is the older facility and has no cameras.

ABC7 News has learned that next week, county supervisors will vote for a $300,000 allocation to install cameras there.

"It's true in sports, it's true in jails," said Dave Cortese, board president. "If you have a weakness somewhere. It will be exposed."

Cortese is confident the board will vote for the cameras, especially after the daring escape.
