SJ's new Red Cross center uses social media to help in emergencies
The new American Red Cross Digital Operations Center in San Jose that was set up to help leverage social media to connect people with resources during an emergency is only the second location in the country to get this technology.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- ABC7 News is teaming up with the Red Cross to help with quake disaster efforts in Nepal. A new operations center in San Jose allows the agency to check social media to connect people with resources during any emergency.

It's a good time for the American Red Cross Digital Operations Center to be put to use. Big screens are placed up on the walls so workers can scan social media while also looking at mapping and metrics.

This is the second Red Cross location in the country to receive this technology outside of its national headquarters.

Social media and technology is the name of the game. Cynthia Shaw with the American Red Cross spoke to ABC7 News about how people can help without having to leave the comfort of their own home.

"After a disaster strikes, updated maps are crucial," she said. "So far, we've had over 2,000 volunteers that have gone onto these open street maps and have tagged damaged buildings, roadways that are not passable, and rural areas that might not have seen any aid. And this allows the relief workers on the scene to get help more effectively into those areas."
