OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- An Oakland police sergeant is being treated for a gunshot wound Monday after a man with an assault rifle fired at police.

Officers shot and killed the gunman and police say he was a suspect in a sexual assault case.

The injured officer went into a second surgery Monday afternoon. Police say the man who pulled the trigger came out of a house firing.

North Oakland resident Sarah Gladstone woke up to gunshots around 1:30 a.m.

"Like people running down the street being like, take cover," she said.

Late Sunday night, Oakland police officers investigated a sexual assault report that led them to a house along Martin Luther King Way and Apgar Street.

"The suspect ultimately came out the front door with a rifle and immediately began firing upon the officers that were in front of the house," said Oakland Police Chief Sean Whent.

Authorities said the weapon used looks to be an SKS type assault rifle with an extended 30 round magazine.

A sergeant and an officer fired back, striking the 48-year-old man, but not before he hit the sergeant, a 14-year veteran. The gunman died at the hospital.

Oakland resident Linda Jenkins has been hit by stray gunfire. She calls the gun violence senseless.

"I mean, I don't understand why people would do things like that. What do you expect going to happen. They got to protect themselves," Jenkins said.

"It's scary that we live in a place that doesn't seem to have a grip on that firearms should not just be so easily accessible," Gladstone said.

Police have not released the identity of the man shot and killed, nor of the two officers involved.
