SAN GABRIEL, Calif. -- A Pomona SWAT officer was shot and injured while trying to serve a search warrant in San Gabriel on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at around 4 a.m. at a home on the 100 block of San Marino Avenue near the intersection of West Hermosa and Las Tunas drives. According to investigators, the officer was shot immediately after entering the residence.
Authorities said the search warrant involved motorcycle gangs in the area. A neighbor told Eyewitness News that the suspect was involved with the Mongols. This has not been confirmed by police.
The officer was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena in critical condition. As of 6 a.m., he was undergoing surgery. A person close to the investigation told Eyewitness News that the officer was possibly shot in the neck with an exit wound through the face. However, sheriff's officials said the officer was struck in the upper torso.
Authorities said a suspect has been taken into custody and there are no outstanding suspects. The suspect's father was shot in the arm during the incident, police said.
The identity of the officer was not immediately released, but officials said he is 45 years old and has been with the Pomona Police Department for 15 years.
Police officers with Pomona, Montebello, San Gabriel and Alhambra police departments were all involved in serving the search warrant. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's homicide bureau is investigating the incident.
