WASHINGTON (KGO) -- The White House announced Thursday that the United States has begun humanitarian air drops to deliver food and supplies to Iraqi citizens threatened by the militant Islamic group ISIS.

According to ABC News, the emergency effort is being deployed to aid 40,000 Yazidis, a group of ethnic Kurds who fled into the mountains and are now stuck without food or water.

The Iraqi government has had little success battling ISIS.
