Vallejo police investigate shooting that critically injured 7-year-old boy
A 7-year old boy is seriously injured after being hurt in a drive-by shooting in Vallejo Wednesday evening.

VALLEJO, Calif. (KGO) -- A 7-year old boy is seriously injured after being hurt in a drive-by shooting in Vallejo.

The incident happened early Wednesday evening while a group of people were gathering on a sidewalk in Vallejo during a wake.

Kumar Polk is now fighting for his life at Children's Hospital Oakland. The family has not commented on the boy's condition.

"Just as I turned the corner, gunfire went off. Multiple gunshots It was rapid shots, continually rapid shooting," said Vernel Creer, a neighbor. "The little boy was laying in the grass right there. He was hit in the leg, the stomach, and shot in his hand."

Kumar was standing on the sidewalk when a car with as many as five people pulled up to the gathering and opened fire.

Vallejo police Lt. Kenny Park said Kumar was not the intended target, and police are not sure who is.

Vallejo ranks in the 96th percentile of dangerous American cities, per capita.
