FREMONT, Calif. (KGO) -- A group of World War II veterans will take off early Friday on a whirlwind visit to the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Luke Sunde is one of the veterans boarding the honor flight. Sunde was a Navy corpsman and served in the South Pacific.

After the war, Sunde spent almost 30 years living in Nepal, working at a medical clinic. He never thought he'd see the memorial.

"It'd be a pleasure, just the fact that we're able to come and see our friends, our comrades who we knew so many of and were so close to for so many years who have gone," he said.

Fremont firefighters raised more than $30,000 needed to send the group of 30 veterans and volunteers to Washington, D.C. for the weekend.
