Off-duty Richmond officer facing multiple charges after gun fired inside San Francisco hotel

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- An off-duty Richmond police officer is facing multiple charges after allegedly firing a gun inside the Four Seasons Hotel Sunday morning.

Police sources confirm to ABC7 News that the off-duty officer Philip Sanches, 45, fired eight rounds from the 12th or 14th floor which was under construction. With few places for responding officers to take cover it took more than 90 minutes to convince the man to surrender, which finally happened around 6:30 a.m.

"He surrendered peacefully. He's currently in custody. There are no reports of injuries," Rueca added.

Police recovered a handgun belonging to Sanchez. He was taken to a San Francisco hospital to undergo a mental evaluation.

He is charged with negligent discharge of a firearm, vandalism, assault with a firearm and shooting in an inhabited dwelling.

Richmond Police Sanchez is a veteran officer of the Force.

"We have since placed the officer on administrative leave we will conduct an investigation on the incident," said Richmond Police Lieutenant Felix Tan.
