Peninsula animal shelter deals with overflow of bunnies

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Bay Area bunnies are multiplying like rabbits do, and it's causing a population surge at the Peninsula Humane Society.

There are currently 58 rabbits at the shelter. That's up nearly 50 percent from this time last year.

"We believe because of the time they came to us they were Easter impulse buys. Purchased by families who thought it was a good idea at the time then realized either it was too much care or the novelty wore off, then they dumped them at their local shelter," said Scott Delucchi of the Peninsula Humane Society.

The Peninsula Humane Society and SPCA are waiving adoption fees for rabbits to help ease this problem. They say rabbits make great pets and can live 10-12 years.
