OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- Now that the lengthy campaign is over, and one day after she declared victory, Mayor-Elect Libby Schaaf stood shoulder to shoulder with outgoing Mayor Jean Quan at City Hall. They are joining forces to ease the city's transition to a new administration.

"I wanted to make sure that everyone knew that we plan to work really closely together so that there's a seamless transition," said Mayor Quan.

"I am just humbled and inspired by your graciousness, your humility and really look forward to continuing to work with you, not just over the next few months for a smooth transition, but for many, many years to come," said Schaaf.

Quan said she believes she is handing off a city that is in much better shape than it was when she took office four years ago, saying, "I think the renaissance of Oakland is well on its way."

Schaaf promised to continue some of the initiatives the Quan launched, including building the police force and the ongoing effort to keep Oakland's professional sports teams in Oakland.

"I'm very appreciative of the work the mayor has done to save our sports teams. This is part of the Oakland spirit that has got to be preserved," said Schaaf.

The 48-year-old Schaaf will be inaugurated and take office on January 5, 2015.
