Ted Cruz stands by refusal to endorse Donald Trump for president

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Can Donald Trump steal the spotlight back on the final night of the Republican National Convention?

On Thursday morning, Trump and Ivanka took the stage in preparation for his nomination acceptance speech, but right now a lot of attention is on Texas Sen. Ted Cruz over the speech he gave Wednesday night where he didn't endorse Trump.

There was no apology and no backtracking from Cruz as he spoke to his state's GOP delegation Thursday morning. "I addressed the convention because Trump asked me to. He didn't ask me to endorse and three days ago I talked on the phone with him and told him I wasn't going to endorse you," he said.

Despite being heckled, Cruz stood resolute in his decision not to endorse Trump.

It was a decision which garnered loud boos from the crowd after his Wednesday night speech at the Republican National Convention.

But Thursday, he made no excuses and pointed the finger back at Trump. "I am not in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father," Cruz said.

Meanwhile, the disapproval from Republicans continues. "I thought it was classless, to tell you the truth, I thought it was a little bit classless," Eric Trump said.

"I think it was awful and quite frankly I think it was selfish," New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said.

On the other side, Hillary Clinton took to Twitter and wrote: "Vote your conscience" using Cruz' words against him.

Trump is not exactly addressing the controversy head on, but he took to Twitter earlier Thursday morning saying: "Other than a small group of people who have suffered massive and embarrassing losses, the party is very united. Great love in the arena!"

At the Texas Delegation Breakfast Thursday morning, there were some delegates shouting Cruz will never be president. It may not have been political suicide for Cruz as there were some delegates who vowed to write in Cruz on the ballot in November.
