"He was laying on the floor," Angelica Grisales told ABC7 News by phone. She'll never forget how she tried to help Mayor Ed Lee after he collapsed in the Safeway where she was shopping Tuesday night.

Lee's wife Anita called out for help.

"The first thing I asked, 'Are you feeling pain,' he said, 'yes,'" Grisales added.

She then called 911, a dispatcher told her to give the mayor aspirin until paramedics arrived. She did.

"I hoped he'd be okay but I woke to the sad news," Grisales said.

Just blocks away, Leon Chow prayed outside Lee's home in Glen Park. Chow, a union rep for home healthcare workers, brought flowers, candles, and signs of thanks. Chow says the mayor was supportive.

"The mayor should know, now he's in heaven, everyone appreciated him," Chow said.

The lighting of the Union Square Menorah on the first night of Hanukkah, paid tribute to Lee. Rabbi Yosef Langer said the mayor was instrumental in helping Chabad of San Francisco find a new home South of Market Street.

"He was a candle of light," Langer said. "He gave himself to the people of San Francisco. We're going to miss him."

Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff tweeted:

Salesforce honored Lee on its digital lobby screens for all to see Tuesday.

The mayor's longtime support of technology and innovation will likely be one of his legacies.
